7 Weeks Home

We’ve had Dex home for 7 weeks now, and we fiiiiiiinally feel like we’ve gotten in the swing of things. I’m still amazed at how many reach out to us to ask how he is. How we are. It means so much to have others cheering for him.

Surgery threw us for a loop, but much of what we are working out now is the same as the NICU. Lungs, eating, weight gain. Lungs, eating, weight gain.

The silver lining of surgery (other than that our little dude rocked it, and we got to see our favorite nurses from L&D and the NICU) was that while we were in the hospital, we found out that Dex has a pretty severe milk protein/soy allergy. Calprotectin measures intestinal inflammation, and the upper limit of normal is 160. Dex’s was 883. So, in an effort to secure his status as Million Dollar Baby (no, really, this priceless little babe may do it!), he’s on Elecare, which is an amino acid based formula that’s $44.97. A can. 🙈. He’s now been on it for 4 weeks, and we are seeing a difference in his comfort level and weight gain. Yay!  When we went for appointments the last two weeks, he finally hit the ounce a day goal.

loving his pacifier nebulizer
We met with pulmonology the week after his surgery, and they gave us the ok to begin weaning his oxygen. Ahhh!  Neonatology had warned us that sometimes pediatric pulmonology is slow to wean, but his doctor was impressed with how he did with surgery and his first month home. He came home on 0.5L flow and is now down to 0.25L. Despite being “allowed” to wean him to 0.125L, Dex is really the boss and will let us know when he’s ready. I don’t think we are there quite yet, but once we are, he will be allowed to try 2 hour stretches without it. 😱. He’s 16 weeks old, and I’ve never had a tube free little face. I’m 100% positive me crying is a bet you’ll want to take. This sweet boy has been through so much, and I’m just so proud of him.

This is our first week since he’s been home that we haven’t had a doctor’s appointment, and that feels pretty monumental. Even though he is only 8 weeks adjusted, he’s doing many things that a term 3 month old would do (his chronological age). At his appointment, he sat on my lap and tracked his pediatrician around the room. He’s rolling over, cooing, and even cracked a grin for his cousin and me this weekend. While he stared down his doctor, she said, “he looks just like a term 3 month old!  Just a miniature one.”  ðŸ˜‚. He is still a tiny little tater tot (just reaching 10 lbs!), but I continue to be amazed by all the ways he beats the odds.

My little boy that wasn’t supposed to come home with me is here.  And he’s thriving. God’s sweet grace.

He still has battles ahead. Sometimes it’s tough to sort out what’s from prematurity, what’s from my water breaking so soon, and what’s just who he is. But, he’s a tiny little fighter and oh so loved, so we will just keep taking things as they come and be thankful he’s here to face them.

I don’t think I could ever be prepared for all the ways Declan has turned our world and our family upside down. A baby boy has never been more loved by his sisters. He’s the apple of Harper’s eye, and every day when she comes home, she rushes to wash her hands and change her clothes and then demands to know where “her” baby is. Her mini-mothering skills have been the only reason our family has eaten something other than takeout over the last month and a half.

The last six months have changed me in many ways, but most of all they’ve strengthened my sense of grace and patience (which I’ve heard is a good thing with three kiddos). No Pinterest-worthy preschool class present?  Oh well. Baby crying all night?  Bring on the snuggles. When you’ve experienced imminent loss, it helps everything become Big Picture. Our baby is home, our girls are healthy and happy, and we couldn’t be more thankful.

Harper Mae {6 Years Old}

I have absolutely adored the age five and all the fun new ways you've grown over the last year.  I was so overwhelmed by the thought of you starting school, but it has been so great for you and for our family.  Even though we are to the last month of school, you've never once woke up and said you don't want to go.  I love Mrs. Campbell for that.  But, most of all, I love that you are learning, challenging yourself, and getting to explore.  You have this little life that is separate from our family, and that is terrifying and fascinating all in the same beat.

You still vie to be commander in chief, but we are working on your being a kind leader versus a bossy pants.  When you embrace that, you are such a help to me with Sister.  It's unbelievable and encouraging, the love you two have for each other.  I get so excited because of how close Leah and I are, seeing that you and Wills may also share that special bond.  But, oh, the extraordinary fighting.  Gracious, there are days where you two would argue over absolutely anything.  And you do.  And then mom gets a little crazy, and you go back to being best friends.

You've learned to read over the last two months, and it is glorious.  You are so smart when you're interested in something.  (And have the attention span of a gnat if you're not.)  You made all S's in school this year in your academic work, and it "blows our minds!" <-- your favorite expression of ours.

We are so, so proud of you.  Sweet little darling that made me a mama, I love your bravery and courage, your curiosity and wit, your warmth and even occasionally your drama.  You are black and white and literal and logical, and oh so fun.  Being your mom has been the most humbling experience of my life, as often all that strong will and determination turn into defiance.  You make my eyes go wide at least once a day from your antics, but I'm sorry, child, you've met your stubborn match.

I already pray for this big life you have.  It may be trapped in a little body right now, but I know that one day you're going to burst out and do big things.  I hope I give you all the tools and the guidance you need to realize that.  I love you to tears, Harper Mae.  To literal tears.  You are special, and important, and mine, and that makes me ever so grateful.

What is your favorite thing to do?  Play with my family
Do you have a nickname?  Poonie
What do you want to be when you grow up?  A teacher.  And I want to marry somebody, even though my dad says not to be in love with another boy.
What is your favorite thing to do with your family?  Play outside and hug all over them.
Who are your best friends?  Mommy, Cohen, Mya, Ella, Daddy, Willa, and Sydney.
What makes you happy?  When I get kisses
What do you like to learn about?  Jesus
What makes you sad?  When I get in trouble for making bad choices
What do you do really well?  Clean up my room
If you had a million dollars, what would you buy?  Shopkins and Valentine's cards for my family.  And one pair of Shopkins for Wills.
If you could go anywhere, where would it be?  MarMar's.  And Mexico.
If you could have one wish, what would it be?  Kissing my whole family.
What was your favorite birthday present?  Getting makeup on.

My Favorites
Food:  Broccoli
Holiday:  Friday, and my birthday.
Book:  Bear
Toy:  Shopkins and my American Doll
Treat: Candy
Song: This Little Light of Mine
Animal: Seahorse

Willa Kate {3 Years Old}

Much to my dismay, sweet girl, you insist on growing up.  Each night I beg you not to get bigger and you'll put your hand so tenderly on my face and tilt your head to look me right in the eye to say, "Look, mommy.  I'm still wittle!  I'm still a wittle girl!  There's nothing God can do to make me not your baby."  (I think you get that from the many times I tell you that there's nothing you can do to make me not love you.  Haha)

You amaze me with your kind heart.  When Harper asks nicely if you'll share your toy, you'll always say yes.  Every time.  Every. Time.  Even if it is your favorite toy and you just started playing with it.  Even when you only have one of something (like a craft to do or a balloon to hold) and even when your play time is about to be up.  Every time you share.  It's so tender and selfless.  Now, if she walks up and just tries to grab it, you grit those bulldog teeth and let out the shrillest cry you can muster and start swinging with all your might, not caring if you land those mini Mike Tyson punches or not.

School has been so much fun for you because you love to learn and sing.  Your teacher Mrs. Collins just adores you.  Just a few weeks ago when Kasey picked you up from school, Mrs. Collins warned her, "Just so you know for when you have children, two year olds do not act like this.  This is not normal.  I've never seen a more well behaved two year old."   You are so polite when you're there, and speaking to your teachers.  Or really to anyone except for the one person who gave you life.  You're happy to save the not-so-polite for me.  It's not very often, and it's usually on the cusp of nap or bedtime, but you have brought the tantrums up to war crime level.  When we were mailing Bubba a package and printed the postage from the self-service kiosk, you were determined to try to peel off the "sticker" to put on whatever you wanted.  Well, I didn't want you to waste the $9.08 stamp we just bought, so I took it from you, and you went from precious to possessed in a nanosecond.  I was immediately the "baddest mommy ever" and you proceeded to cry, no scream the entire ride home.  It was so ridiculous, I couldn't help but laugh, so I kissed you all over your bright red face and put you in bed.  You woke up much happier, telling me that you're glad I still love you, even when you make bad choices.  And that I'm the goodest mommy ever.  Thank goodness those fits are never long lived.

Every night I tuck you into your bed, rub your back, and sing you a few songs.  You learn them so quickly, and your newest favorite is You are My Sunshine.  When I get to that one, you will look me right in the eyes and try your best to make your voice match mine.  You are so good.  And so loved.  So good and loved.

A few questions and Willa Kate's three-year-old verbatim answers:

How old are you?  fwee

What's your name? 'illa Kate Fertitta

Who's your best friend? You.  And Sydney.  And Harper.  Those are my friends.

What's your favorite thing to do?  Play.

What's your favorite song?  Jesus Loves Me.  And Skies are Great (You are My Sunshine)

What's your favorite color?  Purple.

What's your favorite outfit?  My Elsa one.

What do you like to do with your family?  Kiss them.

What's your favorite show to watch?  Paw Patrol and Frozen

What's your favorite book?  The princess ones Harper can read.

What makes you happy?  When you dub my back.

What makes you sad?  Being mean.

Who's your teacher?  Miss Collins

Where do you like to go?  To the restaurant and on big boats

What's your favorite treat?  candy

What was your favorite birthday present?  Try to guess.  Seriously.

Harper Mae {5 Years Old}

Happiest 5th Birthday to my greatest adventure, my best laugher, my most curious explorer, Harper Mae! You make my heart sing.

And despite how many times you've said "When I get 5, I'm going to be the boss" over the last 364 days, I'm sorry again for the sad realization you'll have tomorrow when it's just not true. :)  But, for today, enjoy your Queen Bee status, your ice cream picnic with mommy at 7 a.m., the outpouring of sweet wishes. And know we will love you every single day for forever and treasure you always.

You are one super celebrated little girl!  This may end up being the Twelve Days of Birthday between our celebrations today, the fun things heading your way in the mail from your out-of-town family, and your long awaited pool party that will be next Friday.

MarMar and PapPap kicked off your birthday with a fun video they sent your way last night on your birthday eve.

You were trying so hard to wrap your head around how that balloon could make its way from Alabama to Virginia.  You've just decided it goes up to God and then He gives it back to you.  One would've thought it was Christmas with how excited you were to wake up on your birthday morning to see if your balloon had arrived.  You almost foiled Mama's plan to surprise you with a birthday breakfast picnic.  Now that we are having longer days (more light, more playing), you've been staying up later and sleeping in longer (like 8:30 or later), but not today!  So you nearly caught mama in the act when I was out decorating our porch with balloons and banners at 6:45 a.m.

Sharing with sister now that she's awake

You were so cute demanding "who did this?!  How did you do this, Mom?!"  And then seeing your balloon from Alabama, "I knew it could make it!  It's here for my birthday!  Wait.  Did you put that here, Mom??"  You're a smart one, little lady, but I never let on.  :)

Hmmmm... I don't know how those balloons got here

Harper Mae, you are the sweet birthday queen, so you got chocolate milk and ice cream with blueberries for breakfast.  You only turn five once!  I love you more than words could possibly say, and I'm eternally grateful for these memories with you.

I really wanted to make your evening fun for you, so when I got home from work, I asked if you wanted to go to the pool, which just opened this week. You were so excited!  You picked Chick-fil-A for dinner so we went through the drive through to grab a picnic dinner for the pool. And we hurried over, and you showed off your new bathing suit by the pool...

And then it thundered. Literally. You hadn't even stepped foot in the pool, and it thundered. So no pool. No big deal, we will head to the indoor pool. Nope, when it thunders or lightnings, it shuts down, too. Poor thing. I called Dad to see if he could pick you up and take you to his softball game, since you love being at the field, too. He said sure, and came on by. You guys drove about ten minutes before a torrential downpour started. No game. I felt so bad!

Even though our evening didn't go quite as planned, know that we can't wait to celebrate your big 5th birthday at your Mermaid Pool Party!
